Sheffield Libraries are appealing to sports fans to donate their old programmes and memorabilia ahead of a new project to support older people across the city.
Donations are being accepted at Sheffield Central Library Friday 18th September 12:30pm – 2:30pm.
Starting in the autumn five libraries will be running weekly sporting memories groups across the city. The appeal and project is being organised in partnership with Sporting Memories Network, a charity that helps people affected by loneliness, depression and dementia by bringing like-minded people together to discuss their love of sport and to share memories that are triggered through the use of images and donated items.
Fans are being asked to dig out any unwanted programmes, sports annuals, shirts, scarves or any memorabilia no matter what its age or condition. More recent programes are welcome too.
Councillor Isobel Bowler, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “These groups are being set up to help people living with dementia and memory loss. We know that seeing a reminder or talking about a past event can spark a forgotten memory and that’s exactly the point. We would be most grateful for all donations – no matter how big or small they are, or which sport or era they relate to.
“The groups are also being set up to support older people who might be feeling a bit isolated to encourage them to get out and talk to other people. And we need people to get involved whether by coming to a group or helping to run or plan one.
“This is just one of the many services provided at Sheffield’s libraries, which really are a great community resource.”
To donate your old programmes and memorabilia to the appeal and to find out more about the project, head along to Sheffield Central Library on Friday 18th September between 12:30pm – 2:30pm.
Almost twenty volunteers have come forward to help at the weekly groups. Additional volunteers are still being sought for Stocksbridge and Firth Park. Full training and support will be provided, with the first training session taking place on Weds 23rd September from 10AM – 2PM at central library.
