October is Black History Month, which is the annual commemoration of the history, achievements and contributions of Black people in the UK. Black History Month provides an ideal opportunity for everyone to learn about Black History and to celebrate diversity in our society.

Sheffield has a proud and exciting Black history and Black people have long played a significant role in all aspects of Sheffield’s social, cultural, economic and political life

Sheffield would not be the same without its diversity. Our city’s cultural life is rich and our economy, businesses and universities are thriving thanks to the contributions of our diverse population.  Sheffield City Council gives thanks to all people of Black heritage that have made this city great over the centuries and those who continue to do so today.

Councillor Terry Fox Deputy Leader of the Council said,We are proud of our city’s rich heritage thanks to the contributions of our diverse communities. Black History Month is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate and give thanks to Sheffield’s people of Black heritage who have played a huge part in making our city great over the centuries and who continue to do so today. I hope that regardless of colour, race, or background the people of Sheffield will come together this month to recognise the historical achievements of all the diverse communities that make up our multi-cultural city and contribute so much to it.”

There are a great range of events to mark Black History Month in Sheffield this year, check SCC’s social media throughout October as we share information about upcoming events.
