A total of 22 people who failed to pay a £75 fixed penalty notice for littering were brought before the courts.

Sheffield City Council’s environmental protection service has issued more than 1,200 fixed penalty notices to those caught littering across the city during the last year.

Most of these people chose to pay the £75. However, on Thursday, 16 April, a total of 22 people went before Sheffield Magistrates Court after opting not to pay the fixed penalty.

Some of them were fined £440, as well as being told to pay the council’s costs of nearly £120, and a victim surcharge of £44 – coming to a penalty of more than £600 for dropping litter.

In all, the fines, costs and surcharges total £11,650.

Nick Chaplin, Environmental Protection Manager at Sheffield City Council, said: “We are delighted that the courts continue to back the council’s strong approach to littering.  As these successful prosecutions prove, we will not tolerate those who spoil our city.

“We know the majority of Sheffielders do use the bins, but we take strong enforcement action against the minority that drop litter. It’s unacceptable and if everyone used the ample litter bins provided there wouldn’t be a problem.

“We are always grateful for reports of litter issues to help us keep on top of things. Anyone can do this by calling 0114 2734567.”

  • National legislation makes dropping litter a criminal offence. Sheffield City Council combats litter by providing litter bins across the city, cleaning up the streets through our partnership with Amey, and using Environmental Enforcement Officers to detect littering offences.
  • The council’s Environmental Enforcement Officers will issue a fixed penalty notice to anyone they see dropping litter. If the fixed penalty is paid, no further action is taken.
  • The fixed penalty is £75 with a discount for prompt payment.
  • If the fixed penalty is not paid, then the matter is referred to the courts. The maximum fine for dropping litter is £1,000 per offence.
