From fajitas through to veggie burgers, a variety of tasty treats have been cooked up by families taking part in a course at Oasis Don Valley Academy.

Six families from the area took part in Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food sessions delivered by Sheffield City Council’s Family Learning Service.

The course offered them a chance to learn how to cook healthy, nutritional meals from scratch, with food sourced from local suppliers.

Family Learning programmes provide opportunities for families in Sheffield to learn together, and courses are delivered in venues across the city, including schools and children’s centres.

Razia Awan, a mother-of-three, took part in the course with her young family.

She said: “My son is six. During the Jamie Oliver cooking sessions he has been fully engaged in the cooking activities, weighing, measuring and finding the ingredients.

“At home he has been able to recap the session and the recipes which we are now doing at home together. Thank you to everyone at Family Learning for offering such a fantastic experience.”

Family Learning courses are free and are offered with childcare and additional learner support.

Councillor Jackie Drayton, cabinet member for children, young people and families at Sheffield City Council, said: “I’m really happy to hear that this course was such a success, and that these families enjoyed learning to make new dishes inspired by recipes from around the world.

“We at Sheffield City Council are committed to providing the best possible start in life for children.

“Family Learning courses such as this help families find out more about how their children learn and develop and what they can do to improve their children’s chances in life. Learning together as a family is fun and provides everyone with the chance to learn new skills.”

The Ministry of Food course has been run by family learning tutor Suzanne Lister during the school holidays.

Suzanne said: “The families have gained new vocabulary, used new ingredients and by following Jamie’s quick and easy recipes have enjoyed new foods together.

“It was great to see children and their parents spending time together and learning new things during the summer break.

“Thanks also go to Oasis Don Valley, for allowing us to use such a fantastic venue to deliver this course.”
