There may be more need for umbrellas than snow boots this week but Sheffield City Council is encouraging everyone to be winter ready by giving out free snow shovels.

50 free snow shovels are available for members of the public to collect from the Town Hall. The aim of the scheme is to encourage even more residents to play their part this winter if the snowy and icy weather does hit.

Cllr Terry Fox, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “The Streets Ahead team work very hard each winter season to keep the city moving. We grit over 60 per cent of the road network, have over 1900 grit bins and over 600 snow wardens across the city. This year we also need residents and businesses to play their part.

“We have 50 snow shovels to give away for residents and businesses to use to help grit the pavements in their communities or to clear snow. The Streets Ahead team are prepared this winter and we need the public to also prepare themselves.”

To get a free snow shovel visit the reception at the Town Hall on Pinstone Street and you will be given one shovel per person. They are available on a first come first served basis.
