HSBC employees put forward several possible names for the development, and through an internal ballot, got to vote for their favourite.

The winning name, Grosvenor House, was the clear favourite and celebrates the heritage of the site, which used to be occupied by the Grosvenor House Hotel.

HSBC employees in Sheffield will be relocated from their current office space, Griffin House, to the Sheffield Retail Quarter in 2019 after the banking giant signed as the anchor tenant on a 15-year lease, committing them to Sheffield city centre.

The new address for HSBC’s office will be Grosvenor House, No.1 Wellington Street.

The brand new office space will feature a bright and spacious central atrium and stylish rooftop terrace, with the main office entrance located on the corner of Wellington Street and Cambridge Street, and another entrance facing onto a new area of public realm at Charter Square.

The building will also include retail space. The shop fronts will be primarily located on Cambridge Street and also the important corner where Pinstone Street meets Furnival Gate.

Queensberry, Sheffield City Council’s strategic development partner, has been encouraged by the interest from retailers at this early stage. They’ve been approached by many businesses so far and it is expected that announcements of which retailers sign up to the scheme will be made in 2018.

We have worked closely with HSBC for some time now on the design of its new office space. Their team has been a pleasure to work with and it is fantastic that HSBC has committed to our city centre as it is a vitally important employer with a proud history in our city.

Demolition of the Grosvenor House Hotel, the 1960s-built former five-star hotel formerly situated on the site, was completed earlier in 2017.

Construction Timescales

Construction is being led by BAM Construction who started on site in April 2017.  The new building and new public realm are due to complete in the first half of 2019, followed by tenant fit outs of the offices and shop units.

Plans for the Adjacent Public Realm

The new spaces around the new office building provide a great opportunity to create a new series of high-quality public spaces in Sheffield city centre, continuing the themes introduced at the award-winning Grey To Green programme. There will be new trees, areas of planting as well as characterful hard landscaping to provide people with the opportunity to sit, socialise and relax.

The  spaces will include cafes and seating areas and aim to incorporate the most innovative and sustainable features, sourcing local materials where possible, increasing street tree planting and managing rain water using rain gardens and greened streets to help deal with climate change.

Together with the new building plots they start to build a strong retail connection with The Moor shopping areas, cinema and its associated food offer.

Sheffield Retail Quarter

Sheffield Retail Quarter will transform the heart of Sheffield. The scheme will offer a mix of retail units, restaurants and entertainment venues alongside high specification offices and homes.

The site will be defined by a landmark office building to be occupied by HSBC and a wider development that delivers a new mixed-used quarter in the heart of the city.

The scheme, being delivered by Sheffield City Council and their development managers Queensberry, will regenerate the area in between Charter Square, Barker’s Pool and Pinstone Street. The incorporation of historic and cutting-edge architecture, as well as high quality public realm, will make the development uniquely Sheffield.
