Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said,
“I am delighted that our campaign to bring Sheffield’s HS2 station into the city centre has been successful. We have made the case from the start that a city centre station makes more economic sense than Meadowhall with the additional 6,500 jobs and £5bn extra in growth that it will create. The Council has been fighting for this with local businesses, the Chamber of Commerce and the Sheffield Star.
“Whilst today’s announcement is a huge step in the right direction, it is part of a much bigger strategy. We’re fighting hard for radically better connections to Leeds and Manchester as well as London. We want to create a larger jobs market and unlock new opportunities for local businesses by securing a maximum of 30-minute journey times between the three cities at the heart of the Northern economy.
“City centre to city centre connectivity was always critical to that vision and that’s why we fought so hard to get a city centre HS2 station.
“It has been about the future of the North and Sheffield’s place within it and I will continue to hold HS2 to account to make sure its plans support this bigger vision.
“Connectivity, capacity and frequency is key to this and I will be seeking commitments from the Government to the early electrification of the Midland Main Line, establishing a fast link to Leeds and at least two trains per hour between Sheffield and London.
Midland station also provides a significant economic opportunity because of its city centre location and complements our regeneration plans for the area.
“This includes increasing the size and scale of the central business district, plus creating a series of development opportunities to accommodate the expansion of the city region’s key growth sectors of business, professional and financial services and creative and digital industries. Close proximity to the station is a huge benefit for such businesses that will employ people from across the city region.
“This news comes at an exciting time for Sheffield city centre, with work about to start on site at Sheffield Retail Quarter, a new retail and leisure development progressing on The Moor; high quality offices being built at St Paul’s Place, Digital Campus and Holly St; over 2,000 new homes currently under construction; both Universities continuing to expand and new plans and ideas emerging for the Castlegate area.”
