Sheffield residents are being urged to take advantage of free computer courses to help them get online. The courses are open to everyone, from complete beginners who want to learn how to send an email or search the internet, to those looking to boost their skills.

The council is committed to helping and supporting more residents to access online services. Research shows that getting online can help someone save money on food, fuel and other household expenses. It also has benefits for education, employment, retirement and reducing social isolation.

Being able to easily use the internet will also help residents access vital local and national government services. For example, the introduction of Universal Credit will mean that going online is the main way to apply for and manage a Universal Credit application for most people.

The free courses are being run by Heeley Development Trust, with the support of Sheffield City Council.
Councillor Harry Harpham, Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Neighbourhoods, joined learners who are benefiting from the free computer training courses. He said: “Getting to grips with the Internet can help people in many ways and it’s really important that people know about the support available to get them online. I’m really pleased to see so many Sheffield residents taking advantage of these free and friendly courses. I would urge anyone interested to get in touch.”

Sheffield residents interested in finding out more about the courses should call Maxine Bowler on 0114 250 0613 or visit There are no start or end dates, just ongoing support and advice tailored to individual needs.

Heeley Development Trust are also looking for Digital Champions who can spare 2 – 3 hours a week to help people get to grips with the internet. Digital Champions don’t need formal qualifications in IT, just a practical understanding of modern computers and the internet, as well as friendliness, patience and strong communication skills. If you are willing to become a Digital Champion please call Oday Al-Hamadani on 0114 250 0613.
