The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Sheffield said it was an “honour and a privilege” as she was the city’s 120th Lord Mayor at today’s full Council meeting at Sheffield Town Hall.
The Lord Mayor, Cllr Denise Fox, also becomes the 17th female mayor of Sheffield. The Lord Mayor’s Consort is her husband and fellow councillor Terry Fox.
Born and raised in Sheffield, Cllr Fox moved to Attercliffe aged seven and attended Huntsman Gardens Infant and Junior School where she watched masses of men going to and from work at Brown Bailey’s, the steel factory at the end of her road.
At 15, her family moved to Fox Hill and the following year she began her working life in the offices of Neepsend Tools. She married fellow councillor Terry Fox in 1981 and has two grown-up children, Natalie and Jordon.
Cllr Fox first became a Councillor for the Birley Ward in 2005, a role she has held ever since. She was a cabinet adviser for Children, Young People and Families, and has been on the board of Sheffield Futures.
Cllr Fox nominated four chosen charities during her year of office: St Luke’s Hospice, Sparkle Sheffield, Support Dogs and ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.
Cllr Fox has announced details of her Civic Service which will be held on Saturday 18 June, with a procession through the streets of Sheffield before a service at Sheffield Cathedral.
Cllr Fox said: “I will carry out my role as Lord Mayor the 1st citizen of Sheffield to the best of my ability, and I look forward to the year ahead.”
