Raving by the root vegetables, moshing at the meat counter or fandango to the fishmongers. Shoppers are in for more than just their weekly shop or a bite to eat when they visit the Moor Market this Friday.

Music and food lovers can take part in the first ever ‘Headphone Disco’ hosted in an indoor market as part of the city’s BBC Music Day events on Friday 3 June.

The event has been organised by Plug Nightclub, who regularly hold a Headphone Disco night at their Matilda Street venue, who are bringing the concept out of the club and into the market.

The bizarre spectacle, one of 22 across the city, will likely be one of the more unusual events to mark the day and will start at 12 noon until 5pm.

The event is described by Plug as “a simple concept with a spectacular affect. Take a room full of clubbers, arm them all with a set of wireless headphones, have two separate DJ’s broadcast to them live via two dedicated FM channels and watch the utterly surreal spectacle that unfolds. A mass of humanity, throwing moves”.

Wireless headphones will be handed out on entry to the markets throughout the day, playing big Sheffield tunes from Arctic Monkeys to Def Leppard and everything in-between.

Cllr Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure at Sheffield City Council said: “The Moor Market is growing and developing in to a shopping community for people from all walks of life and this event for BBC Music Day, in partnership with Plug is our chance to show its cool and quirky side and attract a whole new audience.

“Once people see the fantastic range of independent local traders, including artisan goods, local beers, fresh fruit and veg and quality handmade gifts I’m confident they’ll keep coming back for more.

“This is certainly something different for the Moor Market and promises to be brilliantly bizarre, I may have to check it out myself and might even bring my dancing shoes.”

The event is the culmination of a week of half-term family-friendly events and activities. Starting on 31 May at 11am with Kidology’s Tales from a Persian Market – Magical tales about food, markets and bazaars, distant lands and amazing characters from around the world brought to life by live music.

Children will also be able to meet and greet some of their favourite costume characters from TV if they visit the market on Saturday 4 Jun between 11.30am and 2.30pm.

The Moor Market also plays host to Sheffield Food Festival this Saturday 28 May. Shoppers will be treated to live Thai Cooking Demonstrations where they can learn how to cook dishes such as Thai Green Curry and Thai Style Chicken Wings, recipes will be available from Friday on the Sheffield Markets website www.sheffieldmarkets.com.

Terry Ford, Town Crier for Otley, will also be directing customers into the market on the day where new trader ‘Jamie’s Milk & Soda’ bar will be giving away free soda samples of his wares throughout the afternoon.
