NOMINATIONS FOR 2014 LOCAL ELECTIONS

Candidates have been announced for this year’s local elections in May.

A total of 164 candidates will be standing for election across the 28 wards in Sheffield – a third of the city’s seats – plus one additional seat in Walkley following Cllr Nikki Sharpe’s recent resignation. This year 9 of the current members are not seeking re-election on Thursday 22 May.

Of the 29 seats up for election in May, 18 are currently held by Labour and 11 by the Liberal Democrats.

The political make-up of the City Council is currently 60 seats held by the Labour Party, 22 by the Liberal Democrats and two by the Green Party.

The local elections are being held a little later than usual this year to coincide with the European elections. The elections for the six European seats in Yorkshire and Humberside are held every five years and the counts for the European elections will take place on Sunday 25 May, with the results being announced in Leeds (*see notes for editors).
