Sheffield City Council and its partners have been working closely with Pennine Foods to provide support to staff affected by the closure of their Waterthorpe site, announced at the end of last year.
The Council has been working with Pennine Foods, Job Centre Plus and Prospects to ensure that the 600 staff affected have access to the help and support they need. The dedicated support will help staff to make the best choices about their future to maximise the opportunity to find suitable alternative employment, move into another work area or start their own business.
A key event in this initiative was a recruitment fair coordinated by the Council on the 5th and 6th March where over 20 local companies were invited to promoted their current recruitment opportunities. This gave Pennine staff the chance to find out more about a variety of organisations and vacancies they could apply for.
Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council said: “Through its links with employers in Sheffield and the wider Sheffield City Region, the Council was able to get as many companies there as possible, and the feedback from the recruiters was that it was an excellent opportunity to meet the staff who have a great deal of experience to offer to prospective employers.
“They welcomed the fact that it made it so much easier to meet so many people over the course of the event.”
Lois Sarginson, HR Manager at Pennine Foods said: “We welcome the support and opportunities offered to our colleagues in their job search from all employers in the Sheffield region.”
Job Centre Plus and Prospects are also currently running informative sessions which will cover additional information on the current local jobs market. This includes sessions on applying for jobs in the digital age, advice on CV preparation, interview techniques, transferable skills and identifying training needs as well as self-employment support.
Local employers with recruitment vacancies are invited to contact the Council to find out more about the skill-set available. This includes candidates with expertise in food production, finance, administration, quality assurance, engineering and more.
