Sheffield City Council has been given £412,000 to prevent rough sleeping and assist people off the streets and into accommodation and support.

This funding from the Government’s Rough Sleeping Initiative means that the council will continue to deliver targeted interventions through its dedicated rough sleeping initiative team. People will be helped into emergency accommodation by working with local partners and securing longer term housing options in council and housing association properties.

The funding will also increase the capacity of Framework, the commissioned Street Outreach Service that engages with and helps rough sleepers 7 days a week.

Janet Sharpe, Director of Housing and Neighbourhood Services said: “This is good news for the city. In addition to what we do already it means that dedicated officers will work with women who are vulnerable to sleeping rough and prison leavers without accommodation who are at high risk of both rough sleeping and reoffending. We recognise that people on the streets are at risk of serious health conditions and premature death so in addition a Street Outreach nurse will provide an essential link connecting people with health services.

“We’ve started work on planning these services already and they will begin in late spring 2019.”
