Voters have just over two weeks to make sure they are registered for the local elections this year, where all 84 Sheffield City Council seats will be contested.
Monday 18 April is the final date to register for this year’s elections on 5 May.
Around four in every five people eligible to vote in Sheffield are now registered, but it is important that everyone has a chance to make their votes count.
John Mothersole, Returning Officer for the elections in Sheffield said: “Your vote counts. But you need to be registered. If you are not on the register, you will not be able to vote. It is a simple process, and only take a few minutes.
“I would encourage everyone to check to see if you need to register and ensure your name is listed so you don’t lose your right to vote in May.”
A new system called ‘Individual Electoral Registration’ was introduced in 2015, and now every individual is responsible for registering themselves. Under the old system the ‘head of each household’ could register everyone who lived at their address.
Most people who are already registered to vote have been moved onto the new system automatically, so many may not need to do anything, but others will need to join the new register.
Registering online should take less than five minutes. People will be asked for their date of birth and National Insurance number. These details are checked against Government records to help make sure that registrations are genuine.
The website to register is www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
Local residents can obtain a paper copy of the registration form by visiting www.sheffield.gov.uk/vote or by contacting the electoral registration office on 0114 273 4093.
You can check if you are registered by viewing the electoral register at the Town Hall and the First Point office at Howden House on Union Street or contact firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 0114 273 4093.
Polling for the Brightside and Hillsborough By-election, and the Police and Crime Commissioner election, will both also take place on Thursday 5 May
