The councils’ highways contractor Amey will restart their resurfacing programme next week, whilst ensuring the safety of staff and members of the public.
From the 15th June, Streets Ahead will start resurfacing works on some roads in the city, following a temporary pause due to the Covid 19 pandemic.
The first scheduled works will begin on Broad Street in the city centre for five nights, before the wider programme is gradually rolled out across the city.
Residents and businesses affected by the works will be notified of plans via letter, as per the usual process.
Cabinet member for Environment, Street Scene and Climate Change at Sheffield City Council, Councillor Mark Jones said:
“Over the last few months, the majority of programmed resurfacing works across Sheffield have had to be postponed due to the ongoing pandemic.
“Whilst safety critical jobs have continued to go ahead, the programme of resurfacing works being delivered by Amey as part of the Streets Ahead contract, has been unavoidably affected.
“By following national guidance and making appropriate adjustments to working environments and practices, we are confident that Amey can now start to deliver some of these works in a safe way whilst adhering to social distancing guidelines.
“The last few weeks have been challenging for all council services and we are working hard alongside our contractors to find a way back to a new normal. Amey have done a brilliant job of keeping our roads safe and moving in such difficult circumstances and I know that we are all extremely grateful for that.
“I would personally like to thank people in Sheffield for being so patient with us during this time and also for the kindness that has been shown to our highway operatives working hard to ensure the road network has remained safe for essential travel.”
Work on some footways and gully cleaning will also start this week, with preparations in place to start delivering the wider programme over coming months.
Darren Butt, Account Director at Streets Ahead says, “We suspended our programme of planned resurfacing in March due to COVID-19 but I am pleased to announce that we are restarting on the 15th June in accordance with national social distancing guidelines.
“I urge everyone not to engage in conversation with with our employees on site to ensure the safety of all our staff and the wider public. If you need any information about our work, please get in touch using the Customer First telephone number or email address.”
