A scheme to promote a safe and vibrant nightlife in Sheffield city centre has won two national awards.
Last night’s Best Bar None awards ceremony at the House of Lords saw them scoop awards for the ‘Best Overall Scheme’ and ‘Most Innovative Scheme’ along with a prize of £6,000 which will be reinvested into the scheme for next year.

Best Bar None is a national award scheme supported by the Home Office and aimed at promoting responsible management and operation of alcohol licensed premises.

A total of 40 local nightclubs, bars and pubs have signed up to Sheffield’s Best Bar None which runs in the city centre and along Ecclesall Road. It is run by Sheffield City Council’s Drug and Alcohol Coordination Team (DACT) and rewards responsible licensing practice as well as encouraging effective partnership working between the council, police and licensed premises.

It was piloted in Manchester in 2003 and found to improve standards in the night time economy, with premises now competing to participate. It has since been adopted by 75 town and cities across the UK and is now being taken up internationally.

Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for Public Health and Equality at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Sheffield and all those involved with Best Bar None.

“It’s great that the work we are doing in Sheffield has been recognised on a national level; it highlights the hard work that the scheme is doing to keep residents and visitors to safe whilst being able to enjoy a night out in the city”.

Chief Inspector Jayne Forrest said: “I am absolutely thrilled that the Best Bar None Scheme has picked up two national awards. It is great to know that the excellent work the scheme does is being recognised nationally.

“I would like to say well done to everyone who is involved in the Best Bar None project as this is a testament to the hard work that goes in to it.

“We look forward to continuing to support this valuable project and feel confident that the scheme can help us ensure that Sheffield has a safe and enjoyable night time economy.”
