Pavements in the Wybourn area of the city have benefited from a tidy-up, thanks to a litter pick carried out by the Sheffield Ramblers Group and Streets Ahead.
The Streets Ahead team collects around 500 tonnes of litter each month. This is part of Stainless Sheffield – a litter campaign launched last year with the aim reducing the amount of rubbish in Sheffield by 30% by 2017. There are a number of residents and groups who regularly volunteer to pick litter and they are all supported by the Streets Ahead team who provide picking equipment and collect bags of rubbish after the picks.
Members of the Sheffield Ramblers Group, who have formed FIXIT, a group who actively help to keep Sheffield’s pavements clear, have been keeping pavements free of rubbish by litter-picking in the Wybourne area.
Steve Robinson, Head of Highway Maintenance for Sheffield City Council, said: “We work very hard to keep our city clean but we also need the support of all community groups, such as the Sheffield Ramblers Group to do their bit.
“If all residents, community groups and businesses did their small part we could ensure that our city is kept stainless all year round.”
Darren Butt, Streets Ahead’s Operations Director, said: “It’s great to see the FIXIT group out in the community helping to keep our city looking its best. We are always keen to organise litter picks, helping local people to take pride in their community, and we provide equipment to any groups or residents who want to pick with us.
“The litter campaign will be picking up pace again over the coming months, with mascot Phil the Bin out and about in the city challenging anti-social behaviour associated with litter.”
Jan Randall of Sheffield Ramblers Group added: “We have about 10 people who regularly go out into Sheffield to help clear the pavements, both men and women. We work alongside Sheffield City Council’s Rights of Way department and also do jobs that we identify while out on walks. We are not just litter-pickers, but keep public footpaths user-friendly.
“While working on footpaths we inevitably come across litter. Litter is a fact in our society and very difficult to understand, but it mars the enjoyment of the countryside and is dangerous to wildlife and playing children. People who casually throw down their rubbish or throw it out of a car without a thought are spoiling the wonderful green spaces of this country.”
The Streets Ahead team organise a number of litter picks across the city as part of the Stainless Sheffield litter campaign. If you wish to get involved, please call 0114 273 4567.
