UPDATE: Arundel Gate was re-opened at 12.30pm on Wednesday 3 October.
Councillor Jack Scott, Cabinet Member for Transport and Development at Sheffield City Council said:
“We were alerted last night a potential loose cladding panel on the 31st floor of the St Paul’s Loft building, thought to be due to high winds. Nothing has fallen from the building.
“Following inspection, it was decided to declare an exclusion zone on Arundel Gate from its junction with Furnival Gate. This remains in place.
“Specialist abseiling teams are now on site to rescure the panel with the full co-operation of the building owners and tenants.
“The exclusion zone remains in place until this work has been safely carried out. This road closure means traffic is being diverted from Furnival Gate back to the ring road and along Commercial Street and High Street where necessary. It is a similar road closure to those in place for the Sheffield 10k and other city centre events. There will be unavoidable delays to traffic in the city centre.
“Further updates will be posted on our Sheffield Newsroom and Twitter feeds as the situation develops”
