Sheffield based Birley Manufacturing, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers for interior environments and rail carriage equipment is aiming high with support from Creative Sheffield.
The company, which has 92 employees based in Sheffield, was included on the London Stock Exchange Group’s 1000 Companies to Inspire Britain. To be included companies must demonstrate positive growth in revenue over the last four years and an increase in employee numbers, workspace, contract wins or patent filings. The list of the most inspirational small and medium-sized companies in the UK credits companies that have generated new, net job creation in the UK since the financial crisis.
In order to maintain their positive momentum, Birley Manufacturing is now accessing specialist growth support (the Threshold Companies Initiative) from Sheffield City Council’s economic development service, Creative Sheffield. The Threshold Companies Initiative is aimed at businesses in Sheffield with significant growth potential and will facilitate business growth, development and create jobs in the region.
As well as working with a specialist growth advisor from Creative Sheffield, Birley Manufacturing is accessing funding to develop new business services. The funding will be invested in new hardware, software and staffing for a new design service allowing Birley Manufacturing to bring their design work in-house. It is hoped this move will generate an additional £100,000 a year for the thriving business. The company also plans to invest in marketing and software to promote and sell their services to the rail, education and design sectors.
Edward Highfield, Director of Creative Sheffield, the economic development arm of Sheffield City Council, said:
“The Threshold Companies Initiative is funded through Sheffield City Council’s Keep Sheffield Working Fund and is designed to help boost the local economy and support job creation in the Sheffield City Region.
“Birley Manufacturing has been identified as an inspirational company nationally and we are delighted that we can support one of the Top 1000 companies to continue their strategic growth and development plans.”
Steve English, Managing Director of Birley Manufacturing, said:
“Our aim is to grow and develop our key business sectors by at least 10 percent. We feel the addition of design as part of our in-house offering will complement and enhance what we already do. Companies like Birley have much to offer and have proved resilient despite the economic recession. We strive to offer the best, both in the products we manufacture and in the service we offer. We are honoured to be viewed as an inspiration to other companies across the country and plan to continue growing and developing as a business.”
