Although we’ve been working at distance, our city has come together like never before. We have received astounding support from individuals, businesses small and large and charities, citywide.
Generosity is in Sheffielder’s natures and the overwhelming kindness of spirit has shown that our city has answered the call to deliver help and support to the most vulnerable of our citizens at a time like never before.
This is a message of thanks to each and every person and organisation who has helped with an act of kindness that the city will not soon forget.
Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said:
“It is heart-warming to see so many businesses and charities coming together to support the immediate needs of vulnerable people and families across the city.
“My sincere thanks go out to each and every person who is volunteering their time to support their local community in a time of crisis, and to every business and charity going the extra mile in support of the Community Support Service in Sheffield.
“As we all adjust to the ‘new normal’ during the pandemic, our great city continues to rise to the challenge of delivering emergency supplies to those who need them and in combating loneliness with emotional well-being telephone support on offer. Together we will get through this.”
As well as our amazing key workers, we want to thank our local community organisations and businesses for all they are doing during this difficult time.
The voluntary, community and faith sectors have a lot to be proud of right now. We’d like to give them all our heartfelt thanks on behalf of Sheffield City Council’s Community Helpline for their amazing dedication and ongoing support.
These organisations are supporting some of the city’s most vulnerable residents, not just now, but every day. They provide a lifeline for anyone feeling lonely or isolated and are helping with everything from providing food, delivering food parcels, collecting medicines and offering help and advice on a large range of services.

“One of my colleagues mentioned that her mum had received a food parcel. Not only did it mean her mum didn’t have to worry about going hungry, but it also really lifted her mood, making her feel that she wasn’t alone and that there were people out there who cared. She asked me to pass on her thanks for all the work being done to support vulnerable people.”
As well as emergency food parcels Sheffield City Council has supported 20 local Foodbanks with supplies of food and other essentials including baby and sanitary products, donated by businesses and local organisations.
L4G Foodbank said: “The food yesterday was brilliant and comments from clients back this up. Staff tell me the variety was good and they were impressed with the quality and long dates. We have a bit left but as we’re hoping to now increase our referral capacity and deliveries on Wednesdays we could do with more. The combination of tinned and dried stuff from you and the fresh fruit and veg from FareShare is making an excellent parcel.”
The Food Works Sheffield said: “I’d just like to say a huge thanks for organising today’s delivery! The driver made the drop no problems, and already some of the chilled items are displayed, and available to those who need it during this difficult time. We plan on using the items in response to Covid-19, through our Sharehouse market and meal delivery service.”

Update on the Community Helpline
Sheffield City Council has redeployed staff from Sheffield Libraries and Lifelong Learning Services to talk to those feeling lonely during isolation on the Community Support helpline. Parking Services staff have been packing food from Moor Markets ready to deliver emergency food parcels.
Our Community Helpline has been operating for over a month now responding to those in need. To date we have taken:
- More than 7000 calls in to the Community Helpline.
- Issued over 600 emergency food parcels.
- Helped over 900 households with personal shopping.
- Helped over 500 households requesting help to collect essential medication.
