A spokesman for Sheffield City Council said: “We would like to say a big thank you to those residents affected by tonight’s gas leak in Oakbrook Road, for their patience on what has, for many, been a long day.
“We would also like to thank the staff at Notre Dame High School and Taylor Shaw, who ensured that those who could not get home had a hot evening meal, refreshments, and warmth throughout this afternoon and evening.
“While our colleagues at the National Grid are still working hard to try and get everybody back home tonight, residents are now being moved out of the school to more suitable accommodation in the meantime.
“The vast majority of residents are staying with family or friends. However, a small number have been taken to accommodation elsewhere in the city, with the needs of the elderly and vulnerable being taken into account so they are as comfortable as possible.
“We hope that everyone will be safely home soon.”
