New Sheffield Christmas Trail and return of Santa’s Post Office

This festive season Sheffield BID is bringing the magic of Christmas to the city centre with the return of Santa’s Post Office and a brand new Christmas Trail.

The Sheffield Christmas Trail will feature several free, family friendly activities to enjoy in the run up to the big day. Light installations, interactive experiences and a festive trail around the city centre’s shops will create a fun-filled day out to enjoy with the children in the build up to Christmas.

A Christmas Trail…The Story of Brearley’s Lost Christmas List will see families help Brearley Bear, named after inventor of stainless steel Harry Brearley, find the items on his lost Christmas list. To help Brearley, families will have to visit ten venues across the city centre to find his lost gifts, using the Sheffield Christmas Trail app or Brearley’s Little Book of Clues to help them. Every child that completes the trail will receive a special gift at Santa’s Secret Sorting Office.

As well as the Christmas Trail, Santa’s Post Office will return to the city centre bigger and better than before this Christmas. Having attracted 15,000 visitors in 2017, Santa’s Post Office will be based at 15 Barker’s Pool and manned by elves from Lapland. Children will be able to visit Santa’s Post Office to write their letter to Mr Claus ahead of Christmas Day. Every letter will be posted in to a magic letter box which transports them directly to Santa in Lapland.

A giant five metre Santa light installation will sit on Barker’s Pool outside Santa’s Post Office, and a giant Brearley Bear will be lit up at the top of The Moor. The installations will also form part of the Christmas Trail.

As well as providing free, festive activities for families to enjoy in the run up to Christmas, the BID hopes to encourage visitors to the city centre and boost footfall in a crucial trading time for retailers.

Diane Jarvis, Sheffield BID Manager, said: “This Christmas Sheffield BID has decided to bring the Sheffield Christmas Trail to Sheffield city centre, as well as bringing back Santa’s Post Office. We hope that Sheffield’s families enjoy the free activities on offer, and head to the city centre for a festive day out.

“Christmas is also a crucial time for retailers, and with more people to choosing to shop online, we have planned these activities to increase footfall in the city centre and encourage families to shop on the high street.

“Our street teams will be out making sure the streets are clean and tidy. Our BID Buddies – who are based at Unit 1, The Winter Garden, Surrey Street – will be on hand to provide directions, advice on where to eat and drink, and rain ponchos, in case Sheffield enjoys any wintery showers before Christmas.”

Brearley Bear said: “I wrote my Christmas list to Santa in my neatest hand writing but now I cannot find it, and it’s not long until the big day! I need to find some new items to put on my list to Santa Claus, and some new friends to help me. I really hope the families of Sheffield can complete the trail to find all my items.”
